In a new marketing initiative, Elders will conduct an online
Border Leicester/Merino ewe and lamb sale on AuctionsPlus,
increasing the accessibility for commercial producers to
first-cross genetics.

First-cross online first

IN AN Australian sheep marketing first, quality lines of Border Leicester/Merino ewes and lambs will be available on Auctions-Plus.

The first sale will be held next year, on January 19, and will feature sheep from a range of breeders, with one common trait – they will contain Retallack genetics. The sale is designed to be a platform for first-cross ewe genetics and is the first time Border Leicesters have been available on the online AuctionsPlus platform.

Elders agent, Grant Elwin, Cooma, who will be co-ordinating the sale, said it had great potential to be a success. “This may be a small sale, it may be a large one. It’s a bit early to tell at the moment,” he said. “Potentially, this could be one of Australia’s biggest single bloodline sales ever.” Mr Elwin said the open nature of the AuctionsPlus platform could be the key to its success. “The Retallack name and genetics are widely used throughout Australia, in fact in all States except the Northern Territory,” he said. “The online presence opens it up to a broader audience, without the need to travel.”

The sale will be open to all users of Retallack genetics across the country, including through daughter studs, with all sheep and lambs  to be sired by a Border Leicester ram. There will be a strict selection on ewe lambs or 11/2-year-old ewes  for restockers and ewe and wether lambs can also be sold for slaughter. Older first-cross ewes, either unjoined, joined or scanned in lamb to terminal sires can also be sold, as well as Merino ewes which are scanned in lamb or joined to Border Leicester rams.

Retallack stud principal, Graham Grinter, has pioneered the genetics for more than 40 years and said the sale would promote the maternal bloodlines of first-cross ewes. “First-cross sheep have been popular for a long time and their favourable maternal instinct has stood the test of time,” he said. “The top shelf suckers come from first-cross ewes and the genetics are getting better.” Mr Grinter, who sells more than 400 flock rams each year, said the accessibility of AuctionsPlus would help the sale. “The sale gives producers another method of marketing their sheep,” he said. “If they don’t like the price they get, they don’t have to sell.  “It’s a great method of selling.”

Any potential sellers should contact their local Elders agent.
